Fallout 4 features an extensive crafting system when it comes to weapon modifications. It can be a little overwhelming at first, but understanding these basics and taking a look some of our useful tips will get you the weapon you've always wanted.
Where to Mod Weapons
[edit]
Weapons can be modified at the Weapons Workbench, a uniquely designed crafting bench that you'll be able spot by its simple design. You can find these at most Settlements, and you can always build one if its missing. These workbenches can also be found out in the wild, so keep an eye out if you have an itching to craft!
Things You Need to Craft
[edit]
Not everything is free when it comes to crafting weapons. For starters, you're going to need to have a weapon to modify. Many of the weapons you find out in the wild will already have some kind of modifications, and you'll be able to add or remove whatever you like in the crafting process.
Some of the more common basic weapons you'll find include:
Name | Damage | Weight | Mods | |
---|---|---|---|---|
10mm Pistol | 21 | 3.5 | Mods | |
Pipe Pistol | 15 | 2.3 | Mods | |
Pipe Revolver Pistol | 28 | 4.2 | Mods | |
Pipe Rifle | 13 | 2.8 | Mods | |
Knuckles | 16 | 0.5 | Mods | |
Board | 22 | 3 | Mods |
Crafting Components are also very important to getting a weapon modified. Collecting scrap and all that useless junk actually has a purpose in Fallout 4. Bring all your junk to a Workbench and enter the item transfer menu. Use the menu option to transfer and scrap all your junk into components.
Adhesive is a rare but needed component that is essential to crafting weapons. If you aren't finding enough tape out in the wild, the breakdown of Vegetable Starch will provide you with an incredible five Adhesive! Head to a Cooking Station and craft Vegetable Starch putting three Mutfruit, three Corn, three Tato, and one Purified Water together.
Perks are also nice to have, but they aren't required to craft some of the more basic modifications. The Perks that will help you modify weapons include:
- Gun Nut (requires 3 Intelligence): Gives you access to rank 2, 3, and 4 gun modifications, depending on rank of perk.
- Science (requires 6 Intelligence): Gives you access to rank 2, 3, and 4 laser weapon modifications, depending on rank of perk.
- Blacksmith (requires 4 Strength): Gives you access to rank 2, 3, and 4 melee modifications, depending on rank of perk.
- Scrapper (requires 5 Intelligence): Have this perk active to get better components when scrapping junk!
Types of Mods[edit]
Different weapons will allow you to mod different aspects of a weapon, but all of them fall into some or all of the following categories. Keep in mind that each weapon is different, so some modifications will not be available to all weapons.
Receiver
[edit]
Affects damage and weight. Modifications in this slot will make some drastic changes, but they usually come as a trade-off. Increase the damage, but increase the weight as well! Things like armor penetration, critical shot damage, and rate of fire are also affected.
Barrel[edit]
Affects accuracy and range. Long barrels typically improve range and accuracy, while shorter barrels minimize range and improve accuracy and recoil.
Grips[edit]
Affects accuracy. For pistols, expect better hip-fire accuracy, while rifles will improve on sighted accuracy.
Magazines[edit]
Affects ammo. This one is pretty straightforward. Small changes to weight and firing rate may be included.
Sights[edit]
Affects accuracy and range. An improved sight will not only change some of your stats, but you'll have some kind of difference in the way you target an enemy in the action itself. More advanced mods will include target tracking and night vision.
Muzzles
[edit]
Affects recoil and range. Different muzzle mods have different effects. Suppressors will reduce range and improve recoil, and it will also quiet the sound level of your weapon. A Bayonet will add to the bash damage, but drop range. Compensators and muzzle breaks help recoil but reduce range.
Weapon Stats[edit]
Each weapon comes with its own set of values. These stats are key to finding the weapon that fits you best. Most are self-explanatory
- Damage
- Ammo
- Fire Rate
- Range
- Accuracy
- Weight
- Value
Awesome Examples[edit]
Now that you've got the basics down, it's time to craft your own weapon! Looking for inspiration? Take a look at some of our modifications and see if they fit your style!
Night-Vision Converted Alien Blaster Pistol
[edit]
Nickname: Hope's End
- Long Barrel
- Sharpshooter's Grip
- Fusion Mag
- Short Night Vision Scope
Once you've found the Alien Blaster, you'll be able to apply some powerful mods to make an already great weapon even better. Applying the Long Barrel will greatly increase your range, while the Sharpshooter's Grip will slightly increase accuracy. Switch over to the Fusion Mag (requires Science! perk 4) to start using Cell ammo, allowing you to keep using the weapon once the Alien Blaster ammo runs out. You can also throw on a scope of your liking!
Instigating Recon .50 Sniper Rifle
[edit]
Nickname: Extermination
- .50 Receiver
- Long Ported Barrel
- Marksman's Stock
- Large Quick Eject Mag
- Long Recon Scope
- Compensator
Using a Sniper can be a lot more interesting when you apply some of the higher mods for the weapon. First off, try to find a legendary Instigating Sniper Rifle that does double damage on enemies with full health. That, or the Two Shot Sniper Rifle that allows you to hit two consecutive shots. With that in mind, install the .50 Receiver for a different ammo type and bug increase in damage, then throw on the Long Ported Barrel and Marksman's Stock for super recoil. Add in a Large Quick Eject Mag fro better ammo capacity and then pick the scope and final add-on to your liking.
Explosive Advanced Double-Barrel Shotgun
[edit]
Nickname: Double Trouble
- Advanced Receiver
- Long Barrel
- Full Stock
- Reflex Sight (Dot)
- No Muzzle
If you're going to get the most out of your weapon, you're going to want it to be Legendary. With that in mind, when it comes to the Double-Barrel Shotgun, try to find one with the Explosive status. This will have bullets explode on impact doing 15 points area-of-effect damage. Add in the Advanced Receiver for a big jump in damage, and throw in the Long Barrel and Full Stock for better recoil and range.
Stunning Super Sledge
[edit]
Nickname: Whirlwind
- Stun Pack
Yup! Just one mod! This already powerful weapon becomes even greater when you add the Stun Pack, an extra mod the inflicts electrical damage and can even stun the enemy. Get it in Legendary form and you'll be set! Do take note that you're going to need a Science! rank of 1 and a Blacksmith rank of 3.
Comments
If you're looking to change your gameplay experience with the best Fallout 4 mods available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC then you've come to the right place, as we love a good mod. There are plenty of ways to customise the post-apocalyptic world to better suit your needs, so if you want to build improbably big settlements, have Dogmeat by your side along with a regular companion, or just make the wasteland look a bit less like.. waste, then these mods are the perfect excuse to delve back in to Fallout 4.
The best news is that as well as being available on PC, almost all of these Fallout 4 mods can also be added to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, meaning console players can get involved and are no longer excluded from the customisation party. There's good reasons why Fallout 4 is one of the best RPG games around, but let's make it even better. For Xbox One and PS4 we've provided links to the Bethesda mods website, and for PC you'll be sent to NexusMods. Happy modding!
SimpleSeasons
Despite the bursts of colour occasionally seen in Fallout 4, you can't deny that eventually you'll get fed up with the dreary yellows and browns of the wasteland. SimpleSeasons changes all that by turning the apocalyptic world into a feast for the eyes (but not the senses, which anyone with hayfever will be happy to hear). These four mods - you don't have to download them all if you don't want to, by the way - will either blanket the wasteland in snow, have lush greenery springing up, turn everything into a haze of oranges and yellows, or create verdant trees that are just beginning to turn yellow. Now if only there was a photo mode to capture all that beauty..
- Get SimpleGreen (Spring), SimpleYellow (Summer), SimpleRed (Fall), and SimpleWhite (Winter) on Xbox One
- Get SimpleGreen (Spring), SimpleYellow (Summer), SimpleRed (Fall), and SimpleWhite (Winter) on PS4
Everyone's Best Friend (Dogmeat + Companion At Same Time)
Dogmeat is a peculiar companion. There's no denying that He's A Very Good Boy, Yes He Is, but a number of companion perks don't affect to him: Live and Love doesn't apply to the doggo, and he doesn't disable Lone Wanderer perk benefits. This mod allows you to have Dogmeat and another companion simultaneously. Safety in numbers, right? Because you can't use external assets on the PS4, this mod isn't available for anyone with Sony's console. Bad Sony.
Stronger Dogmeat
Vanilla Fallout 4 has Dogmeat doing 1-2dps when he attacks the various nuisances corrupting the wasteland. As anyone with a fondness for the loyal companion will know, that doesn't really seem fair. In case you haven't guessed it yet, Stronger Dogmeat increases his damage to 58dps, making this canine deadly enough to send any raiders fleeing with their tails between their legs.
Any Mod Any Weapon
Forget the weapon crafting limitations of the base game, the Any Mod Any Weapon mod lets your imagination run wild when you're at the workbench. Ever want to shoot cannon balls out of a hand-held revolver, create an electrified mini gun, or shove a Deathclaw's claw onto a boxing glove? All possible with this mod.
OCDecorator
Best Fallout 4 Weapon Mods
Finally, you can do what your mother always told you to and pick up after yourself. The OCDecorator mod enables you to place any object on any other object, so placing weapons and armor on shelves or office fans on desks is no longer a pain in the ass. Now you can have everything in your settlement neatly organized, locked in place, and perfectly displayed instead of having everything getting knocked over by NPCs and ending up in a pile on the floor.
Place Anywhere/Everywhere
Fallout 4's vanilla settlement editor isn't the best. Walls don't always line up, you get items and furniture that just can't be placed where you want, and you end up with some unsightly gaps in your decorative structures (and even worse, defenses). The Place Anywhere/Everywhere mod allows you to clip into other objects so you can fit everything together neatly. No more gaps, no more mess.
- First download SwaPA, then get it on PS4
No Build Limit
Of course, even if you use the previous two mods to stack objects on top of each other and clip them into otherwise unobtainable places, you'll still eventually run up against the Build Limit for your settlement and have to curb your design plans. Unless you install this mod, that is, as it removes the Build Limit for all settlements - use with caution though, as those limits are there for a reason and you could slow down or crash your game if you go too far.
Legendary Modifications
If you're looking for your weapons to pack a bit more punch, you might want to check out the Legendary Modifications mod. This mod adds a new modification slot to your weapon and armor crafting options, allowing you to include one legendary weapon or armor attribute to your item in exchange for a significant amount of materials. You can choose from a list of every attribute available in the game, giving you everything you need to make an unstoppable wasteland explorer.
Craftable Ammo
The Craftable Ammo mod adds even more crafting to the expansive build-fest that is Fallout 4, but we have no problem with that. The mod includes a new crafting table called the Reloading Workbench, allowing you to take materials and fill your ammo stores with plenty of bullets and bombs. No need to wander the radioactive wilderness looting bodies and checking drawers for forgotten ammo. Just get crafting and make it all yourself.
Infinite ammo for your companion
The trouble with giving your companion a weapon other than their default choice is that they love to burn through your ammo. The Infinite ammo mod solves that problem. As long as your companion has one round of ammo for their respective weapon in their inventory, they can fire forever - except the Fat Man mini nuke launcher, because, well, that could create a disastrous situation.
Armorsmith Extended
If you're a bit of a fashionista in Fallout 4, you're going to want to download the Armorsmith Extended mod, which adds a new Armorsmith crafting table that allows you to make clothes and armor, lets you wear gas masks and bandanas under more hats, and lets you upgrade every piece of clothing and armor. Really, it just makes every piece of clothing and armor more valuable, which is definitely a good thing. Unfortunately it's not on PS4, but Unified Clothing Overhaul is a super replacement - you just have to make sure Armor and Weapon Keywords Community Resource is installed first.
- First download AWKCR, then get UCO on PS4
Settlement Supplies Expanded
The standard Fallout 4 set of structures, furniture, and objects you can build and place into your settlement is pretty limited, but when you add Settlement Supplies Expanded, there is a much larger selection. With the mod installed, you'll find hundreds of new objects to add into your virtual home. The new items include everything from vault doors and barbed wire concrete walls to trees and even aircraft.
Full Dialogue Interface
When conversing with other characters in Fallout 4, sometimes your character can just say the darndest things. Using the default paraphrased dialogue options doesn't always clearly convey how your character will respond with that choice. With the Full Dialogue Interface mod, you take out all of that guesswork. The entire response is written out on the dialogue option, which might help your conversations go the way you intend them to. Because Sony don't let their modders use external assets (thanks, Sony), this mod isn't going to appear on PS4 for the foreseeable future. Damn.
Lowered Weapons
This is more of a personal preference, but it always bothers me when my character is always pointing his or her gun forward. Lowered Weapons makes your character's weapon handling a bit safer for those around them. Whenever the weapon isn't being aimed or fired, the firearm is lowered to a less aggressive position. It's all about gun safety, people. If you aren't careful, you'll put someone's eye out. As is the case with the Full Dialogue Interface, Lowered Weapons uses external assets so can't be ported to PS4. Yeah, I'm disappointed too.
Better Graphics And Weather
If you're fed up with seeing the same views as you explore the post-apocalyptic wasteland, then this mod can help you with a change of scenery. With subtle adjustments to the weather and lighting effects, your outlook on the world can be updated and refreshed.

OverviewEdit
Weapon mods can be built from raw materials and attached to weapons at weapons workbenches. There are over 700 mods[1], generally including sights, barrels, stocks, receivers, magazines and more. The Gun Nut perk is required to create better modifications for guns. The Science! perk is used to create better modifications for energy weapons and create advanced modifications for bullet based firearms. The Blacksmith perk is used to create better modifications for melee weapons.
Perks and weapon modsEdit
Most firearms, including energy weapons, offer the option to customize the grip/stock, receiver and sight, changing which perks affect the weapon.
- A firearm with an automatic receiver gets bonuses from the Commando perk.
- A firearm with a non-automatic receiver and pistol grip get bonuses from the Gunslinger perk.
- A firearm with a non-automatic receiver and a stock mod get bonuses from the Rifleman perk.
- The Sniper perk only works with a non-automatic firearm with a scope, which use the 'hold breath' mechanic.
Grip mods create pistol weapons, while stock mods create rifle weapons. This allows for almost any ranged firearm to be customized to fit the player's character build.
Action Points and weapon modsEdit
This section is based on research presented in YouTuber RedMage's[1] video: 'Fallout 4: VATS and AP Formula Solved!'[2]
The FormulaEdit
Attacking from from V.A.T.S. uses up Action Points (AP). There are three numbers that determine what the AP cost is for every type of modded weapon: the weapon's base AP cost, the weapon's AP multiplier, and the mod's AP effect, and they do it based on this formula: Destiny 2 seed of light drop.
- weapon base AP cost + (weapon AP multiplier x mod AP effect)
Each weapon has a different base value of action points that it uses per shot. For instance, a 10mm bare receiver costs 21 AP per shot in V.A.T.S., so its AP base value is 21.
Each type of weapon also has an AP multiplier that determines how much effect mods have on the AP of that type of weapon. Combat shotguns, for instance have an AP multiplier of 1.75, while laser guns have an AP multiplier of 1.25, meaning mods applied to combat shotguns will have a greater impact on AP (up or down) than mods on laser guns.
Finally, each mod has an AP effect, which is how strongly it changes the weapon's AP cost. There are some general patterns to how strongly the mods affect all gun types, but it's inconsistent. For instance, the reflex sight has a consistent -3 effect on all gun types tested, but the long barrel mod has an effect of +1 on 10mm pistols, but +4 on hunting rifles.
Weapon and mod detailsEdit
Type | Base AP cost | AP multiplier |
---|---|---|
10mm pistol | 21 | 1.4 |
Combat shotgun | 31.5 | 1.75 |
Hunting rifle | 25.2 | 1.4 |
Combat rifle | 22.5 | 1.25 |
Laser gun | 21 | 1.25 |
- Example
A combat rifle (base AP cost = 22.5; AP multiplier = 1.25) with reflex sight (AP effect = -3):
- 22.5 + (1.25 x -3) = 18.75 AP cost per shot

NotesEdit
- Each time a new mod is built, the Sole Survivor receives a small amount of XP.
- Building weapon mods replaces the current mod applied to the weapon, the replaced weapon mod is stored in character's inventory. Attempting to craft a weapon mod, which is already present in the character's inventory, will apply the mod from the characters inventory instead of using material (no XP is earned).
- Mods stored in a workshop can be reused, and they will be available at all other settlements connected by a supply line. Mods can also be stored in containers.
- Every disassembled weapon mod has a weight of 0.5.
- Mods purchased from merchants may be reused an unlimited amount of times on as many suitable weapons as one wishes. The breakdown resource value for the weapon will reflect the addition of the mod.
- Codsworth and Paladin Danse will love it when the player character creates weapon mods, and Preston Garvey likes it.
- Unlike armor modifications, most weapon mods cannot simply be removed from a weapon except for muzzle modifications. They must be replaced with an available or a newly created modification before the desired mod will be put into the Sole Survivor's inventory. Should the Sole Survivor not have the skill or resources to create the higher tier mods, the mod on an acquired weapon may be replaced with standard mods with fewer resources expended and no skills required.
- Each mod may have up to eight qualities describing the magnitude of the mods effect on weapon stats. These qualities are always sorted in descending order in the mods description, ranging from big bonus to big penalty: Exceptional - Superior - Better - Improved - (Standard) - Worse - Reduced - Inferior - Poor
- The Nuka-World (add-on) includes new melee weapon mods that include rockets (like the super sledge) along with weighted and heating coil mods.
